The Grammys 2018 perfectly lived up to all the hype that surrounded it. A clean sweep by Bruno Mars left us dazzled with some 24K magic and a powerful performance from Kesha (along with Cyndi Lauper, Camila Cabello, Andra Day, Julia Michaels and members of the Resistance Revival Chorus) gave us goosebumps while also solidifying the pop star’s comeback. One thing which raised more than just a few eyebrows however was the lack of female nominees for album of the year with Lorde being the only woman to receive a nomination. So, we are about to channel into our inner Kanye and say Bruno, we are really happy for you and we’ll let you finish but these three female artists deserved a shoutout at the Grammy nomination for album of the year:
Taylor Swift- Reputation
Starting the list off with the very person Kanye interrupted, how befitting. Jokes apart though, Reputation is a pretty solid album with the song “Look what you do” particularly successful both commercially and in the charts. The album itself hit number one in US Billboard Hot 100 boasting the biggest sales and streaming figures of the year. Surely that should be enough to receive a nomination, right?
Lana Del Rey- Lust for life
The album which features the critically acclaimed single “Love” and also collaborations from The Weekend, ASAP Rocky, Stevie Nicks and Sean Lennon was left out of the list. Although it did receive a nod in the category of “Best Pop Vocal Album”, it would have been nice to Lana being featured in the album of the year.
SZA- Ctrl
The debut solo from the American singer-songwriter was to simply put, outstanding. It dominated the charts, it dominated the sales and SZA even received five nominations in the Grammys including Best New Artist, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and also Best rap/sung performance and to do it in her debut speaks volume. Getting nominated for best album of the year would have been the perfect end to an otherwise stellar year.
