What was your inspiration behind the name ‘Gemini by Ridy Sheikh’ for your clothing brand?
Being born in June, I am a Gemini myself. Geminis are known for their curiosity, playfulness, and the ability to juggle various passions, hobbies, and careers. This brand is, in essence, a reflection of my own multifaceted personality. Each collection under Gemini is designed to have unique and eye-catching elements, just like the versatility of a Gemini, allowing individuals to express themselves in various settings. For instance, some fits seamlessly transition from day to night, offering a range of styles that can be
adapted for different occasions. Whether it’s a jumpsuit that transforms from office wear to evening elegance or a versatile hot pink crop top that can be paired with a skirt, pants, or even a saree, I aim to provide options that empower individuals to experiment and find their unique style.
Explain the creative process behind designing a collection for Gemini. How do you ensure that each piece resonates with your personal style and vision?
Designing a collection for Gemini is a meticulous process that starts from scratch. I personally oversee every step -from designing and selecting materials to discussing cuts and conducting numerous trials before finalising each product. The tagline of the brand,
‘merging style with versatility,’ encapsulates my vision. I am driven by a desire to merge diverse styles and cater to various preferences. We also actively support the UN Sustainable Development Goals by contributing towards Gender Equality, as I am also an UNDP SDG Socializer. For instance, my launching collection ‘Eternal Muse’ was dedicated to women, celebrating their achievements and paying homage to legendary figures. The designs were named after inspiring women like Bibi Russel, Valentina Tereshkova, Frida
Kahlo, Cleopatra, and Isadora Duncan. My emphasis is not only on creating aesthetically pleasing designs but also on ensuring practicality. I want people to be able to style their clothes in different ways, allowing for shoulder on or off options, varied sleeve designs, and creative accessory usage. The continuous refinement process involves exploring textures and materials, making samples, and iterating until I am satisfied that the end product aligns with both my personal style and the brand’s vision.
How do you balance the creative expression as a dancer with the more commercial aspects of running a clothing brand?
Balancing the creative expression in my dance performances with the commercial aspects of running Gemini is both a challenge and a source of immense satisfaction. While dance is my primary career path, I seamlessly integrate it into the promotion of my clothing line. Take, for example, my last collection with three different co-ord sets, one of which was named ‘Linear Arts’ – a black piece with white linear faces. Drawing inspiration from its Halloween potential, I integrated it into a Halloween dance concept.
This synergy between my two passions not only adds a unique dimension to my work, but also serves as a powerful marketing tool. Dance becomes a form of promotion, and it has not adversely affected the success of Gemini. If anything, it has enhanced the brand’s visibility and resonance with a diverse audience.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs?
My journey as a dancer, spanning diverse dance forms from east to west, significantly influences my own fashion sense. While each collection may not draw inspiration from a specific dance style, the overarching theme is a celebration of versatility, mirroring my own experiences in the world of dance. For example, my personal style is eclectic – you might find me rocking hoodies and sneakers, or glamming up outfits with thigh slits and high heels for music videos. Sometimes, I pick simple and traditional looks in cotton sarees with a teep on my forehead – I do it all. This diversity is reflected in the varied offerings of Gemini. From casual fits in the winter collection to the popular co-ords in the latest release, I aim to provide options that resonate with different tastes. The fusion is not limited to a specific theme, but mirrors the amalgamation of styles that define my journey in dancing.
How do you envision the impact of collaborations on the future success of Gemini?
Gemini’s growth hinges on collaboration, aligning with my commitment to positive global change through fashion. DEFCLO, an online store and fashion house that supports independent designers, played a crucial role in Gemini’s inception, being our strategic and business partners. Collaborations with influencers and artistes, especially in dance, are key to our success. Witnessing individuals create content and showcase their unique styles while wearing Gemini outfits is gratifying. We have recently launched offline in partnership with Flagship 138, a store located in Banani. Additionally, we hope to showcase our brand at the premises of the lifestyle club, Starbase. My other brainchild, Ridy Sheikh Starbase Dance Studio, is located there. Looking ahead, I am excited about expanding collaborations, perhaps dedicating a collection to dancers and crafting outfits that resonate with my personal taste.
