The Dhakaiyya Dream

During an interview for ICE Today’s February issue, Mehruz Munir said we would get to see a lot of ‘Dhaka’ in his upcoming collection. And he remained true to his words. As the fashion aficionados of Dhaka thronged to Zurhem’s Spring-Summer 2019 launching event at the Hotel InterContinental, they found themselves to be seated in the alleys of the old town. There were artificial facades representing the heritage buildings and shops as though in a retro film. Starting from biryani to betel leaf shops, there were rickshaws, tangled masses of telephone wires and actors representing all the traditional occupations of a bygone era. All essentially very much reminding everyone about this crowded city that we love so much.

Be it the red carpet or the food stations flooding with nifty nimble, the organizers didn’t leave a single stone unturned to wow the invitees. Hats off to Sadat Chowdhury, who was being a wonderful host (as always) and updated the audience about their upcoming endeavours. The guests too showed up in their evening best, resembling some after party of a Hollywood award ceremony. After everyone was seated, the magic began. The best models of the industry were handpicked by the designer himself to sashay down the aisles in dresses which were dazzled with rickshaw paint, an art form, we the urbanites take huge pride in. But with Mehruz’s Midas touch, they were not merely some filmy faces oozing colours; the genius sprinkled a dash of Andy Warhol and voila! Motifs like peacocks, tigers and even Mehruz’s own portrait came alive on the silky canvas which took shape in the form of shirts, jackets and evening gowns. A riot of colors and creativity, the show is a milestone for our fashion industry. It’s another jewel in the crown of the Zurhem brand.
