For as long as we can remember, lungis have been a fundamental apparel for Asian men. Granted it might not be the go-to choice of clothing for our generation, most of us have grown up seeing our fathers flaunt it. A reason for its widespread popularity is its cheap price but what if we tell you that you can make a fortune out of it abroad? You might want to nick a lungi or two from your dad’s closet and list them up on ebay because guess what? Zara is selling them for £70 a pop!
That’s right! In their latest debacle, Zara has released lungi-style skirts which we swear look exactly like what the mama from the tong at the end of the road wears. Just look at them!
This raises the question of whether or not we have actually been ahead of the western world in fashion the whole time. Lungi has been around for ages in Bangladesh and it is a proud moment for all of us that it is being embraced as a fashion statement in the western countries. So what we want to ask you is, would you dare to make lungis great again? Who knows, maybe you’ll inspire H&M to start their own line or Kanye West to embrace the lungi look.
