Know thy managers: Josep “Pep” Guardiola

Our segment, Know thy manager has covered some of the most decorated managers in the history of football. Our next entry of the segment rank among the elite of football, he revolutionized the tiki-taka style of football and took the world by storm when he won the treble during his maiden season at Barcelona. Ladies and gentleman, we give to you, Pep Guardiola. The man attracts success as much as flowers attract bees. He has won the La liga tile as both a player and a manager for a grand total of 9 times, 2 Champions League title, 3 Bundesliga titles and 3 FIFA Club World Cups and that’s only half of his trophy cabinet. Currently the boss of Manchester City, his team has been just crushing foes and scoring for fun under his guidance this season. So without further ado, here are 5 intriguing facts about the man:

He is an art lover!

After his glorious career as the Barcelona boss came to an end, Guardiola took some time off. He spent a good portion of his break in New York wandering from one art gallery to another.

He also attended a lot of basketball games during his time in the US!

Pep is a massive fan of Coldplay

The current Manchester City boss actually listens to “Viva La Vida”, the British band’s 2008 hit single.

He could have actually caught his favourite band live had he joined City a bit earlier. Such sadness.

He had a trial with Manchester City as a player!

In 2005, then Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce invited Guardiola for a trial with the Citizens. A move did not materialize but fast forward 12 years and Pep is actually their new boss!

He has a stadium named after him

Due to his various accolades and his contribution to football, Pep’s hometown team CF Stantpedor renamed their stadium to Camp Municipal Josep Guardiola in his honour.

Perhaps the most mind boggling fact in our segment yet, Guardiola has won 20 trophies in his first 400 competitive matches. We had mentioned his impressive trophy cabinet earlier and even though he hasn’t won anything with City yet, the averaged a trophy every 20 games at one point and that is just insane!
