GHOSTS, GHOULS, AND GRANDPARENTS

Despite the modern commercialisation of Halloween, this holiday is deeply rooted in tradition, tracing back to the Celts, Romans, and Aztecs. As an integral part of our collective consciousness, this tradition has been observed across various cultures. It is considered to be the day that the veil between the mortal world and the underworld is the thinnest, and thus it is a powerful time to connect with our ancestors, embrace death and rebirth in our own lives and honour the archetype of Death.

As a society, we tend to shirk the idea of death. We do not like to acknowledge its existence, and hence we have no idea how to react when faced with it. In some ways, without true awareness of our own mortality, we keep choosing to numb ourselves and live our life without true meaning or connection. We do not have any festivals or special days in remembrance of our ancestors of the dead. If we can adopt Halloween as a tradition to celebrate and have fun, perhaps we can adopt its deeper meaning into our lives as well.

In astrology, Halloween always falls during the season of Scorpio, the sign of death and rebirth. It is a time to confront the truth about what is dead and decaying in our lives so it can be removed for good. It is a time to investigate hidden aspects such as the occult and tap into our inner power. It is also a time when strange and spooky things happen because the veil has thinned.

Historically, Halloween was known as a night for receiving prophecies of the future. People used it for divination, and young women even began traditions like bobbing for apples to predict their future husbands. In modern times, it offers an opportunity for self-reflection, especially regarding death and rebirth in our lives. We can use this quiet time to listen to our intuition, particularly as Halloween occurs at the end of eclipse season, when things feel uncertain and shaky.

Eclipses are wildcards in astrology that bring karmic and fated events and epiphanies that redirect our paths. The astrology of this Halloween is certainly spooky, especially after night falls. The moon will be in Libra, squaring both Mars and Pluto. We can expect intense emotions, aggression, and overall heightened feelings. Rather than going out for a wild party, this evening would be better spent avoiding chaos.

Soon around midnight, the moon will slip into Scorpio for a new moon. This is a chance to renew our psychological awareness, transform our pain, and be radically honest with ourselves about our shadows. During this time, we can perform rituals to connect with the power of the new moon, set intentions, and honour our ancestors.

Here is a ritual you can try for Halloween:

  • Set the intention to communicate with your ancestors and invite them into your home.
  • Leave a plate for them at your dinner table.
  • Create an altar with things that remind you of them or their photos.
  • Offer them something that they used to like.
  • Cleanse your space of negative energies by using incense, sound frequencies, and chants.
  • Light a candle and meditate on your ancestors. You can find videos on YouTube.
  • Journal or free write after. You can also use an ouija board or tarot cards if you like.
  • Thank them for their time and allow them to leave. You can close the connection by blowing out the candle.
