As I embarked on my journey to Europe last month, I could not help but notice a remarkable transformation in the fashion landscape of our very own Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The ‘airport look’ phenomenon, once reserved for celebrities (especially those from Bollywood) captured by paparazzi outside international terminals, has now permeated the general public. This shift, away from questionable fashion choices to a more refined and trend-conscious airport style, reflects a result of global influences and the rising disposable income in Bangladesh. Questionable, you say? Wait, I am getting there.
Not too long ago, my observations during flights to destinations like Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok left me puzzled by the sight of grown men sporting three-quarter pants. I would ask my friends, “Why three-quarter pants?” Sadly, none had the answer. This confusing middle ground between full-length trousers and shorts seemed like a fashion faux pas that had overstayed its welcome. If I could play fashion police at our airport, that would be the first thing I would ban. However, my recent experiences at the airport revealed a notable shift in the way men now dress during their travels. And oh, it is so much better!
FREQUENT TRAVELLERS EXUDE A DISTINCTIVE AURA – A COMBINATION OF EASYGOING CONFIDENCE AND PACE THAT NAVIGATES BUSTLING TERMINALS WITH EASE AND FINESSE. WHEN WE DRESS THE PART, WE START FEELING A SENSE OF BELONGING AMONG THOSE WHO HAVE MASTERED THE ART OF JETSETTING, AS THE COOL AND NONCHALANT OUTLOOK BECOMES OUR OWN.
This time around, men were striding through the terminals enjoying the perfect balance between comfort and style – a blend of cool sweatshirts, track pants, trendy sneakers, complemented by chic crossbody bags and sophisticated luggage sets. The pièce de résistance? Travellers donned sunglasses even when there was no sign of sun. Pretentious? You may think so, but it doesn’t really matter. These travellers were channeling the aura of movie stars gracing our Instagram feeds as they navigated the airport. I was genuinely impressed. So, it got me thinking, what has sparked this transformation?
One key factor is the increased exposure to global fashion trends, facilitated by the undeniable influence of social media and widespread internet access across the country. Images of celebrities effortlessly exuding style in airports worldwide have not only inspired, but set a new standard in travel wear for the general public. Simultaneously, the rapid economic growth in Bangladesh has brought in higher disposable income, enabling individuals to travel more frequently and invest in their wardrobe while adopting a more discerning approach to fashion, even during travel.
But the benefits of embracing airport looks extend beyond aesthetics. Dressing the part when traveling can offer a multitude of perks. Here are some you too might notice during your next trip.
More Respect
A polished appearance, from the check-in desk to immigration, commands respect. Well-dressed individuals invite better service, unexpected favours, and even upgrades, enhancing overall journey comfort. Fellow travellers and airport staff are more likely to extend favours to those with a polished style and pleasant conduct. You have no idea how many times I’ve avoided excess baggage fees because I made an effort in the way I dressed along with a polite demeanor.
Sense of Belonging
Frequent travellers exude a distinctive aura – a combination of easygoing confidence and pace that navigates bustling terminals with ease and finesse. When we dress the part, we start feeling a sense of belonging among those who have mastered the art of jetsetting, as the cool and nonchalant outlook becomes our own. It is not just about making an impression; it is also about keeping our spirits high during our trips. Choosing outfits we love adds a positive vibe to the entire travel experience. Those long travel hours seem more bearable when we feel good about ourselves.
Fast Friends
Dressing well for the airport can open unexpected doors, even beyond the confines of our journey. Whether striking up a conversation with a fellow passenger or making a positive impression on a business associate in the airport lounge, our clothes become a silent yet impactful networking tool. I have met some really interesting people during my flights. Having someone interesting to talk to during long-haul flights can make the journey a lot more enjoyable.
Local Treatment
Your airport looks are a prelude to blending in seamlessly at your destinations. Opting for attire that reflects an elevated style not only makes your arrivals more comfortable, but helps you effortlessly integrate with the locals. Nobody wants to stand out as someone who has just stepped off a plane and has no idea where they are. In cities like Bangkok and Istanbul, taxi drivers will possibly take you for the longer ride and charge you two times the fare if they sense you are a rookie traveller. It has happened to me too many times. So, how about you embrace a style that resonates with the spirit of your destination and camouflage your travel anxiety a little? This subtle approach may enhance your travel experience by fostering a connection with the local environment, and who knows, save you some money too.
As you prepare for your next trip, consider not only the destination but also the statement you can make with your travel attire. Maybe you too can experience perks resulting from a well-put-together look. And even if you do not, I am sure you will have a pleasant journey. So, go ahead and transform the airport into your own runway of self-expression. Think of yourself as a movie star ready to be papped. But most importantly, happy travels!
