CRAFTED TO PERFECTION

The Chronomaster Sport is set to bring Zenith back into the spotlight as the watchmaker to beat.

The Chronomaster Sport is the culmination of over 50 years of mastery of the sporty chronograph and the automatic chronograph calibre. Equipped with the latest generation of the El Primero chronograph calibre, it measures and displays elapsed time with a precision of 1/10th of a second in a contemporary yet unmistakably Zenith design.

At first glance, the Chronomaster Sport will take anyone aback by the finishing and attention to detail. The bracelet is brushed with polished centre links, but the ends have also been polished to match the centre links. When the light hits the hour markers, they look like torches. A dramatic effect is achieved while at the same time assisting in the prioritisation of different design elements.

It brings all of the brand’s best bits from the past into one thoroughly modern model. Dimensions on the Chronomaster Sport are spot on with a case diameter of 41mm, a case thickness of 13.6mm and a lug to lug distance of just 46.8mm. The majority of this watch’s aesthetic can be attributed to the De Luca and the brand’s desire to modernise such design.

When we turn the case over, we’re greeted by the new El Primero automatic calibre 3600 developed in-house. To begin, this is a 1/100th of a second chronograph, which means that instead of the chronograph hand rotating around the dial once every 60 seconds, it completes a full rotation in 10 seconds. It is where the bezel comes into play, as you can now precisely time events to the tenth of a second.

Perhaps, the movement generated by the El Primero is the most incredible feature of this watch. The fact that this is Zenith and the El Primero should not be a surprise. Even if you start to think the novelty of a 1/10th second chronograph is wearing off, turn the watch over and enjoy watching it in action through the display back. Digging deeper into those subdials, we can learn even more about the movement, as what’s going on is not always clear. The subdial at 9 o’clock keeps track of running, continuous seconds. The 6 o’clock dial displays the chronograph’s elapsed minutes.

The blue subdial serves as a 60-second chronograph, which means that every time the chronograph hand completes a rotation around the dial, this subdial advances by 10. Essentially, the final subdial serves as a conventional chronograph hand. This movement not only has all of this impressive watchmaking, but it also has 60 hours of power reserve and vibrates at five Hz (36,000 vph) in a case that is only 13mm thick. Recent years have seen a lot of focus on the modernisation of watchmaking, with Zenith and this remarkable evolution of the iconic El Primero watch. More than ever, it appears that mechanical watches must be able to keep up with modern expectations.
