Venom trailer embraces the inner anti-hero

An extended trailer for Sony’s upcoming superhero film Venom has been released. Despite its superhero movie status, the promisingly dark Venom does not fall in the trope of the superhero movie mania.

Tom Hardy plays the lead character Eddie Brock – a journalist investigating Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams for exploits at a corporate entity. The trailer offers up plenty of glimpses of the infamous Symbiote – seen speaking to Eddie several times. With an urge to protect its host, the Symbiote takes down goons raiding Eddie’s apartment, and goes through daring lengths to keep him safe on a motorcycle.

A protective anti-hero. That’s new

Woody Harrelson, who is rumoured to be playing Carnage has not been seen on the trailer, which has sparked speculations that perhaps the role is a small one. It remains to be seen whether Sony’s character focused horror approach to Venom will pan out as excitedly on the silver screen as it promises in the trailer.

The character made his big-screen debut more than a decade ago in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, where he was portrayed by Topher Grace. The movie is intended to be the first film in Sony’s Marvel Universe.

Venom will grace theatres on Oct. 5.
