Oneplus has entered the war against bezels; cue the notch

In recent photos provided exclusively to the Verge, it has been revealed that the latest Oneplus flagship phone is going to carry a notch, similar to the iPhone X, on its display. The infamous notch, which was introduced to the world through the Essential Phone and expanded on (pun intended) by Apple, has smartphone enthusiasts divided into two groups. There are people who are okay with it and claim they often forget that it is there and there are people who absolutely hate it and call it an eyesore. Even with all the bad press and mixed reviews, many smartphone manufacturers seemed to have embraced the notch. And now the Oneplus 6, joining the likes of the Huawei P20 series, Asus ZenFone 5 and 5Z and Sharp Aquos S3, is going to wear the notch while undertaking the risk of being called “another iPhone copycat”.

The Oneplus 6 in all its glory

In an interview with the Verge, Carl Pei, co-founder of Oneplus, has stated that Oneplus’ notch will be nothing like the iPhone’s and that it has been crafted with a lot of careful thought and consideration. However, he believes that the notch was necessary in order to make the screen’s diagonal measurements bigger. “How big a notch is always dependent on your choices as a company,” Carl Pei told The Verge. “What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen.” The notch is going to be of dimensions 19.616mm x 7.687mm, to be exact.

The Oneplus 6 is rumored to hit the stores during the second quarter of the year. The flagship device will house a SnapDragon 845 chipset along with 8 GB of RAM. In terms of storage, there are going to be two variations; one with 256 GB and one with either 64 or 128 GB. The back of the phone will have dual cameras, featuring 20- megapixels and 12- megapixels sensors, along with a fingerprint scanner. There is also going to be a 3.5mm headphone jack (thank god). Additionally, it also appears that Oneplus has teamed up with Marvel Studios, so be prepared for a possibly limited edition Avengers: Infinity War variant of the phone.
