From plastering the model’s face with feathers to flaunting what looks like a half shaved chicken suit, New York Fashion Week has always been outrageous. Among most ingenious designers such as Philipp Plein, Chromat and Marc Jacobs with his oversise Carmen Sandiego silhouettes, it was difficult to pick a head turner on the runway until Kaimin showed up with the most absolutely ridiculous 2018 Spring/Summer collection.
One can expect a madcap collection from him since the South Korean designer has dressed celebrities who share the same unique taste in fashion, for instance, Lady Gaga. However, at the NYFW runway, he took outrageous to the next level. His collection “Oriental Garden” embodied diversity, uniqueness, and acceptance of individuality with the life-giving human vagina, portrayed by the Merkin and the Mohawk on the runway.
What is a Merkin, you ask?
The Merkin dates back to the 1450s where most citizens had to shave their pubic and body hair for personal hygiene and to get rid of pubic lice; Noble and wealthy people wore pubic wigs to cover their genitalia after shaving. Females wore Merkins made of fur, beaver pelts, linen etc while men wore loops, chains, metal etc. The Merkin was originally used by prostitutes which later became a style statement in the runway of New York Fashion Week, thanks to Kaimin.
NYFW is a platform that’s all about letting creativity flow in all directions. However, Kaimin’s collection this year has raised eyebrows as to whether at times we distort the idea of beauty and fashion in the name of art. Well, the collection reflects the individual desire and becoming the best version of one’s self; be accepting of one’s uniqueness. So without getting into any debate, let’s just enjoy the collections from NYFW for what it is- a fashion runway.
