While love and belonging may rank 3rd in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, research shows how crucial a feeling of acceptance can be for survival. A comeback movie for Manisha Koirala and a debut for two newcomers, Madiha Imam and Shreya Chaudhary, Dear Maya seems to follow a very intriguing storyline based on just this. Two young girls, Anna and Ira decide to prank a lonely Maya by writing her love lettersto bring her out of her depressing solitude. However, the prank takes a serious turn when Maya genuinely falls for her imaginary admirer and goes missing.
While the rest of the story is still a mystery, it has us hooked. We don’t know what potential the rest of the movie will carry but thus far it has managed to reinforce everything we know of love- it has healing powers. The trailer showed a shriveled up Maya bloom into colours as she learns to embrace her beauty through the eyes of her admirer.
