In the heart of one of the world’s fashion capitals, New York City, fashion weeks unite models with esteemed designers and brands to unveil their latest collections. Earlier this year, popular Bangladeshi model Nibir Adnan Nahid graced the runways of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and the subsequent Couture Fashion Week New York (CFWNY).
Nibir, who began modelling in 2010, has won several awards throughout his career, including Best Iconic Model of the Year at the Iconic Star Fashion and Business Awards 2021, International Model of the Year at the British Bangladesh Fashion & Lifestyle Awards 2022, and Best Model of the Year at the BIFA Awards 2023. He was also ranked 22nd among Stunning South Asian Men by Buzzfeed in 2018 and named the Most Sought After Face of Bangladesh by ICE Today in 2016.
This year, the United States House of Representatives recognised Nibir for his significant contributions to the cultural landscape of California’s 34th Congressional District. Congressman Jimmy Gomez praised Nibir’s dedication to promoting Bangladeshi arts at the Ananda Mela Los Angeles Festival, and the City of Perris recognised him for his contributions to cultural exchange and artistic achievement at the Ananda Mela Award Ceremony.
For him, winning awards is about paving the way for other aspiring talents from Bangladesh, proving that the country can make a mark internationally.
Nibir made an appearance at NYFW on September 10, wearing designs by Ekanem Archibong and Inga Kovalerova. Focusing on humanitarian aid, funds from artist contributions and ticket sales for that show were allocated to assist seven families in Palestine enduring inhumane living conditions in tents and longing to reunite with their loved ones in Scotland – a cause that deeply touched Nibir’s heart.
At the 40th CFWNY on September 14, he showcased Bangladesh’s rich and vibrant culture by walking the ramp in a Majid Lodi fusion outfit, merging traditional elements with high fashion.
He credits his participation in the two fashion weeks in New York to his dedicated research on social media, which provided insights into model selections and enabled him to submit the necessary information through NYFW’s official website and successfully join the coveted events.
“It was an unforgettable experience. The energy, scale, and global spotlight were unlike anything I had witnessed before,” he shares. “The entire process – from fittings to runways – was intense yet exhilarating. Every detail was meticulously curated, and being surrounded by some of the world’s most talented designers and models pushed me to give my best. It was a moment of celebration and growth for me, as I realised the impact of stepping onto such a grand stage on my career.”
Nibir believes that just as NYFW showcases designers, models, and styles from around the world, celebrating diversity in body types, ethnicities, and aesthetics, Bangladesh can also embrace more diverse representations in fashion, highlighting the beauty and craftsmanship of its unique culture. “NYFW features innovative and immersive elements such as digital runways, live streaming, and unique venues. It has seen a rise in eco-friendly collections. Bangladesh, as a hub for textile production, can lead in sustainable fashion by promoting ethical practices like slow fashion and eco-friendly materials. We can enhance our global presence while maintaining our unique identity, making our mark in the international fashion arena,” he adds.
Nibir also participated in the popular South Asian bridal show, Dulhan Expo, on September 22. He takes the mental and physical preparation for high-profile events very seriously, approaching it with the same mindset he had when he first started his career.
Nibir’s aspirations for the future encompass not only broadening his modelling career but also using his influence to empower others and advocate for greater inclusivity within the industry.
“As a model, I aim to continue breaking barriers internationally, representing Bangladesh on larger platforms and collaborating with the world’s most prestigious fashion houses. I want to be part of campaigns and runways that push boundaries, embrace diversity, and redefine global fashion standards,” he shares. “Beyond modelling, I envision taking on new creative roles, such as launching my own fashion line or mentoring the next generation of models from underrepresented regions like South Asia. I also have a passion for giving back, so I hope to leverage my platform to support causes that uplift and empower communities.”
