Threads of Success

What were the driving forces behind your remarkable journey from medicine to leading a top Bangladeshi fashion brand?

My transition from a medical career to the world of fashion was fueled by my passion for creativity and design. I believe that staying true to my vision, being persistent in pursuing my goals, and surrounding myself with a supportive team has been instrumental in propelling my success. Additionally, adapting to market trends while staying authentic to my brand’s ethos has helped me navigate through various challenges and maintain an upward trajectory.

What are some significant challenges you have encountered in your career as a woman, and how did you triumph over them?

I have faced my fair share of challenges, from gender bias to societal expectations. However, I’ve learned to view them as opportunities for growth and empowerment. My advice to other women encountering similar challenges is to stay resilient, believe in themselves, and never compromise on their values and aspirations. Surrounding oneself with a supportive network and seeking mentorship are also important.

What is your approach to designing innovative and eye-catching fashion pieces that distinguish themselves within the Bangladeshi market?

The secret to crafting unique designs is drawing inspiration from the world around you, whether it is art, culture, nature, or personal experiences. Developing a keen eye for beauty and honing your ability to perceive it is crucial. Additionally, experimenting with various materials, textures, and techniques allows the exploration of new creative frontiers. Ultimately, remaining true to your vision and infusing your designs with innovation and craftsmanship are the cornerstones of standing out in the market.

What measures can the fashion industry implement to foster greater equality and inclusivity?

The fashion industry has made strides towards inclusivity, but there is still much work to be done. One crucial step is diversifying representation both on the runway and behind the scenes, from models and designers to photographers and executives. Investing in education and mentorship programmes for underrepresented groups can help break barriers and create more opportunities for aspiring talents. Additionally, fostering a culture of openness and accountability, where everyone feels valued and respected, is essential for driving meaningful change.

In light of this year’s theme of inspiring inclusion on International Women’s Day, how do you think women in business can work together to create a more equitable and inclusive workplace culture?

To foster a more inclusive workplace culture, collaboration among women in business is essential. Supporting one another by amplifying voices, sharing resources, and advocating for equality-promoting policies is crucial. Mentorship and sponsorship programmes play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of female leaders and providing a strong support network. We need to cultivate a culture of allyship and solidarity, actively listening to marginalised voices, promoting intersectional approaches, and addressing biases and discrimination. Through unity, support, and advocacy, women in business can drive significant progress toward a more equitable and inclusive workplace culture, not just on International Women’s Day, but every day of the year.
