Perk your ears up to the tunes of contemporary musician from Chittagong, Riad Hasan

Growing up with the electrifying band music of the early 90’s, up and coming musical genius Riad Hasan cites music as his lifelong passion. His genres of interest include indie, soul, pop & soft rock and fusion. With the heady combination of classical and modern music enlivening his formative years, Riad recollects how it was growing up in a riverside colony in Chittagong, where music permeated the air and alleyways.

Receiving classical vocal training in his early teens from Ustad Surobondhu Ashok Chowdhury, Riad added to his musical skills by picking up the guitar while in class eight. Drawing inspiration from some pioneering bands and artists of Bangladesh, Riad embarked on his musical journey, dedicatedly composing pieces which feature in his ultimate debut album of 2014 “JodiBhabo”. Songs like the dreamy picturesque “Bus Kabbo” and the entertainingly relatable Chittagonian song “Digital Fua” are sure to be a pleasant surprise for a first listener. In his words, “The album is a culmination of 14 years of being involved in music.”

Prior to releasing his album, Riad reveals that he made an attempt at the regular route of college-university-corporate job. After receiving his bachelors from IUB, and completing MBA from Dhaka University, Riad sought management training at a multinational company from 2011 till 2014. Growing discontent with the drudgery and monotony, Riad decided, “This was not my cup of tea.” Leaving the comforts of a stable career, Riad made a beeline back to the studio – committing fully to his passion.

He shows deference to his roots, saying, “Coming from Chittagong, you’ll hear some phrases and concepts which are particular to the dialect and the culture surrounding it.” He humorously explains the meaning of the word dibiling in his song Satkaniya- Fatikchori, which actually means dribbling – like in soccer, but which has been adopted by Chittagonian dialect to mean restlessness.

Apart from pursuing his passions, he also dabbles in advertising and co-runs a guitar learning center called Da Capo Guitar School with another talented musician Shaik Salekin. Riad envisions adding more to his musical repertoire in the near future. Currently he is preparing to release his second album “Mini-pack”, where you can have a listen to Satkaniya-Fatikchori.
