Shakira dropped the highly anticipated music video of ‘Perro Fiel’ featuring Nicky Jam on the 15th of September and it is already trending on YouTube. Although it garnered 20M views on YouTube the song did not quite live up to the hype. Here are 5 reasons why Perro Fiel may not be one of her best releases:
Music
The beats in the song were very similar to ‘Bailando’ by Enrique Iglesias. Even though Shakira is known for creating unique music, this song seemed like a sequel to other Spanish songs that were popularized over the years.
Video
Shakira is known for her belly dancing and people love it. She is a phenomenal dancer, but her dance moves in this song were rather raunchy. This could have been used to their advantage but repetitive moves throughout a video that held no deeper meaning made it less engaging.
Lyrics
The idea of a back and forth conversation in a song is intriguing. But the conversation seems a very ordinary one between two people who want each other and are crazy for each other. Even the lyrics is repetitive to a point that it is difficult to see if there is any real passion between the two.
Setting
At first glance, the setting seems dark and glamorous. Shakira looks absolutely stunning in her outfits but as the video progresses, the setting seems to have no relation to the lyrics. The huskies may be the only nod to the lyrics as Nicky Jam sings of wanting to be a ‘faithful dog’ to her. But the random men playing women as violins in the beginning, the tunnel and the dirt bike action hold no significance whatsoever.
Composition
Even though the song was fairly upbeat, it was, as agreed by many, a basic Reggaeton song. The song fails to grasp attention right away, as opposed to her past popular songs.
This may not have been Shakira’s most profound, but most of the songs on her album El Dorado surpassed all expectations.
