Wake up, put on your makeup, smell the coffee and try not to get raped. It doesn’t matter if you’re Asian or Caucasian, if you’re a girl, ‘don’t get raped’ happens to be a part of your to-do list. You’ll life will still be in one piece if you can’t pay your bills, but get raped and you’ll be scarred for life!
In light of the recent turn of events two university students were sexually assaulted and video taped in one of Dhaka’s premium hotels. Can you blame the place? Or your clothes? Not really. This brings us to the sad truth that it doesn’t matter where you are or what you are wearing, you will get raped because you were born with, for the lack of a subtle word, a vagina. Unfortunately, that’s perceived as your vulnerability. Can you change their mindset overnight? No. But, you can certainly think on your feet to avoid falling prey to sexual violence. Let us walk you through a few pointers!
Be wary of your surroundings
It’s very important to know the places and people in your life. Be it your coaching classes, a friend’s party, a workplace. Know where you’re getting yourself into and see if it’s safe for you. Given that it doesn’t seem very safe, take another companion with you or avoid the place or person entirely.
Safety tools
Keep sharp objects in your bag such as keys, pocket knife etc. Nothing that can lead to a murder but something effective enough for you to defend yourself. Other than that, invest in a pepper spray. An alternative to pepper spray would be chilli flakes mixed with water in a tiny spray bottle.
Situational tactics
Always look for an exit. If you find yourself approaching an unfavourable place or situation, look for a window you can escape through or a room you can lock yourself in and make a call while the rapist lurks outside. If you find yourself at a party (much like the recent case at hand)try to gain access of the sound system so that you can turn it down. That way if you scream, someone can come to your rescue.
Self-defense classes
Self defense classes are very handy. Although a lot of it requires practise and precision, knowing a bit of hook and jab won’t hurt you. However, it is very important that you execute it with confidence and courage; try not to falter while you’re at it!
