Bangladesh has reached heights in the world of cricket which was unfathomable even 15 years ago but like most South East Asian countries, is yet to show any promise in the world of soccer. That is all about to change though; it looks like soccer will get a taste of the Bengal flavour with Shamit Shome. A Canadian professional soccer player of Bangladeshi origin, Shamit has been signed by Major League Soccer team Montreal Impact and we could see him feature in the MLS very soon.

Shamit has previously played for FC Edmonton and also the University of Alberta. A midfielder who has been described to have great awareness on the pitch, Shome is one of the brightest graduates of the Edmonton academy. Collin Miller, head coach of FC Edmonton has stated that Shome possesses a genuine knowledge of the game which sets him apart from other players. Shamit has represented the Canada U20 team but is yet to represent the national team which means he still has the option to represent the Bangladesh National Football Team (we need you!). Regardless of which country he ends up representing, Shamit will be the first Bangladeshi to play in the first division football (or soccer as they call it) in America. We would like to wish him all the best and we hope that Shamit inspires an entire wave of Bangladeshi footballers to go and show the world what we are made of.
Go get ‘em tiger!
